Data Modelling at Scale
This is the second in a short series of articles exploring how modern data platforms can be built in a faster, more consistent and more maintainable way using DataOps.
Data Vault 2.0 provides a proven approach for integrating and governing data within modern data platforms, but implementing it consistently can be challenging as platforms grow in size and complexity. In this article, we'll look at how Seriös ONE uses metadata and automation to simplify Data Vault modelling in the Silver layer, helping data engineers spend less time on repetitive development work and more time delivering value.
Silver Layer: Data Vault Made Manageable
The Silver layer is where raw source data is cleaned, standardised, and integrated into a consistent shape while still retaining full detail and history. For this layer, we recommend using the Data Vault 2.0 modelling methodology because it's built for integrating data at scale while remaining flexible to change.
Data Vault is powerful but has a reputation for being complex to implement. Seriös ONE makes it practical by automating the repetitive parts whilst preserving the methodology's benefits.
To create a Data Vault table, you define JSON configurations that describe your business keys and source data through a plethora of options. The framework then generates all the Data Vault structures automatically. Let's look at a concrete example.
The Hub Satellite automatically gets:
- ProductHashKey: SHA-256 hash of the business key
- All descriptive attributes: product_name, category, price, etc. (all source columns)
- RecordSource: Data lineage tracking
- RowHash: Hashed value of all the source attributes to be used for change tracking
- LoadDate: When this version became active
- LoadEndDate: When this version was superseded (or ‘9999-12-31’ if current)
The framework handles:
- Hash key generation using SHA-256
- Detecting which records have actually changed
- End-dating previous versions when attributes change
- Incremental loading based on watermarks
- Deduplication if multiple sources provide the same business key
For Hubs, Links, Link Satellite and Reference table types, the pattern is similar. The framework automatically generates the required metadata fields and manages the relationship tracking throughout a complete Data Vault model.
The key insight is that Data Vault structures follow highly regular patterns. Every Hub needs a hash key, metadata columns, and incremental merge logic. Every Satellite needs historical tracking with effective dating. By encoding these patterns once in the framework, data engineers can define dozens of entities in minutes rather than days.
Consider what this means in practice: adding a data source to the warehouse becomes a matter of creating a single JSON configuration file, testing it locally, committing to Git, and deploying through CI/CD. The framework ensures every entity follows the same high-quality patterns.
That configuration need not even be written by hand: because it is structured metadata, an AI agent can inspect the source, infer candidate business keys, and draft the JSON leaving the engineer to review and approve.
Turning Data Vault into a Repeatable Process
Data Vault is designed to support change, scale and auditability, which is why it remains a popular choice for modern data platforms. The challenge is that implementing Data Vault consistently often requires significant effort, particularly when managing large numbers of Hubs, Links and Satellites.
By capturing common Data Vault patterns as metadata, Seriös ONE removes much of that repetitive work. Engineers define the business requirements and source mappings, whilst the framework takes care of the underlying implementation, helping ensure consistency across the platform.
This approach allows teams to scale Data Vault modelling without continually rebuilding the same logic, making it easier to onboard new data sources whilst maintaining governance and data quality standards.
What's Next
In the next article, we'll look at how Seriös ONE supports Kimball-style dimensional modelling in the Gold layer, combining metadata-driven automation with the flexibility of Spark SQL to deliver business-ready data models for analytics and reporting.
